Chiyoda Licenses Its Flue Gas Desulfurization Process in USA For Georgia Power Owend 4 FGD Units

Jan 26, 2005

On January 5, 2005, Chiyoda Corporation (Chiyoda), Yokohama, formally signed the contract with Southern Company Service, Inc, Birmingham, Alabama, for the provision of CT-121 Process license and associated engineering services for Bowen 1 - 4 FGD units in the Bowen Power Station owned by Georgia Power, Atlanta, Georgia.

Southern Company Services (SCS) and Georgia Power are the group companies of Southern Company, one of the biggest electric power companies in USA, with which Chiyoda has cherished good relations for a quite long time. Under the current contract, Chiyoda will supply the license and associated engineering services to SCS, who will undertake engineering, procurement and construction of the Project.

Bowen Power Station, located 50 km Northwest of Atlanta, is Georgia Power's major coal fired power station with the four (4) power generation units (750 MW x 2 units, 950 MW x 2 units), and Georgia Power intended to apply CT-121 Process to all of the four (4) units. Chiyoda's services include assistance to prepare the template designs for the classes which will be appreciable to the future projects in the same classes. And SCS has started, with Chiyoda's assistance, the engineering work on that principle.

The fundamental distinction in how the CT-121 Process developed by Chiyoda provides pollutant to reagent contact, compared to that of a spray tower, is that the Jet Bubbling Reactor (JBR) in the CT-121 process sparges the flue gas stream into a pool of gypsum and limestone slurry to accomplish the pollutant to reagent contact or mass transfer. On the other hand, a spray tower process disperses the reagent slurry into the body of flue gas stream.

In addition to SO2 removal, multi-pollutants are expected to be removed at higher rate in the JBR.

Chiyoda is now active in the sales of CT-121 Process technology in China, USA and European markets, backed-up by the experiences of more than 50 units in Japan as well as in overseas including those currently completed and commissioned with customers' satisfaction for Kobe Steel's 2 units of 700 MW FGD and Maizuru 900 MW FGD unit. In couple of years in the past, Chiyoda succeeded in the export of CT-121 Process technology to fourteen (14) units to overseas coal fired power stations.

Chiyoda Corporation, headquartered in Yokohama, Japan, provides services on a global basis in the field of engineering, procurement and construction for gas processing, refineries and other hydrocarbon or other industrial plant projects, particularly for Gas Value Chain Projects. For more than 50 years, Chiyoda has constantly leveraged its extensive experience and far-reaching global network to give it an unrivaled advantage. The Company will continue its EPC business, while innovating an expanded business model that includes plant lifecycle engineering (PLE). This will enable Chiyoda to become a one-stop provider of everything its customers need in the way of plant development and operations.
